Microsoft has always been pretty reticent about releasing Windows Phone sales numbers. For the first time in a long time they have actually made direct reference to Windows Phone sales performance, noting Windows Phones units increased 50% between Q1 and Q2 2012.
While this is not a direct sales number, if we use IDC’s 3.3 million sales estimate from Q1 2012 and add 50%, we get 4.9 million handsets sold, about what one would expect from the other OEMs besides Nokia.
This also shows how much Nokia is dominating the Windows Phone market, with more than 80% of the market belonging to the company.
