Words

Haha, this is what I just read about blue color: It is deep like the sea, it is true like the ocean. It is calm, but powerful. It is unpredictable, it is just like the sky, blue and stable, but what do you know when you cross a fence of stable? You have to be true, or you won´t have a clue.

Nokia Lumia 800 now available in Venezuela on Movistar

WP Central

Good news for those in Venezuela, the Nokia Lumia 800 is now available exclusively on Movistar for Bs 4,399 on contract.
The Lumia 800, featuring a 3.7" screen, 1.4GHz CPU and 16GB of storage has been taking the world by storm, hitting numerous Latin and South American countries in the last few weeks. The launch of the Lumia 800 follows Microsoft's recent launch of the Windows Phone Marketplace in the same country back in early May, allowing users in that country to gain access to the nearly 100,000 or so apps and games.

Chris Weber: Nokia committed to bringing Pureview to future Lumia handsets

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TpxYxwBiEC4#t=0s

wmpoweruser

Chris Weber, Nokia’s US President gave  a 20 minute interview with Howard Chui ofHoward Forums.
In it he promised to bring Pureview to Windows Phone, and noted that getting the best exclusive apps for Lumia users  was part of their strategy.  He also suggested Nokia Mix Radio may make its way to US and that the company would expend more effort on less services which were more compelling to users.
Chris handles Howard’s negativism pretty well, and it is clear Chui is pretty out of touch with the Nokia Lumia 900’s performance in US so far, including outselling the Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T.
The interview is definitely worth the watch.

Lumia 900, China promotion

Details emerge on the Dark Knight Lumia 710 covers for T-Mobile US

Dark Knight Covers

We ran a story a few days ago showing the Dark Knight Rises logo on the Xpress colored backs for the Lumia 710.  We now have an update to that story with the details. T-Mobile will be giving these out for free with a special new promotion starting June 13-July 10th when you sign up on a new two-year contract, either as an upgrade or a new customer.
New customers will get a colored back for free in the store at time of purchase, there is no mail in special for the colored Batman backs. These backs are limited, so be sure to go get them quickly before they run out. The Lumia 710 will also be free with a mail-in-rebate for Classic voice plans. Not only is getting a Batman colored back amazing, but you get the phone for free.
Nokia knows how to sell their devices by giving customers a solid and great experience at a affordable cost. This new cross promotion will sell more 710's, not that they needed any help, and get more windows phones in peoples hands. Although AT&T has the largest variety of Windows Phones, T-Mobile is doing a great job with only 2 that are currently being sold in stores (the Lumia 710 and HTC Radar).
Get your Batman on starting June 13th, the sooner the better. That way you can be one of the few rocking that sweet Windows Phone with a colored back showing off your love for the Dark Knight!

CNET reviews the Nokia Lumia 610, gives it 4 stars, “one of the more attractive budget smart phone options out there”

CNET UK has reviewed the Nokia Lumia 610.

They note, I suspect somewhat erroneously, that the Nokia  Lumia 610 is the first Windows Phone for the cheaper end of the market — a sector which has been ably exploited by legions of low-cost Android devices. The phone will be available with monthly contract prices starting from around £15, while SIM-free handsets can be picked up for roughly £180 which should expand Windows Phone’s reach to younger mobile buyers.
The found build quality good, the design modest but fetching in parts, and notes it feels like a handset that’s worth more than its retail price. In their test the LCD screen was average with descent viewing angles but a washed out look.
They were disappointed by the lack of expandable storage, but said SkyDrive does make up for it somewhat. Another negative was the lack of full app compatibility, but again they  found this sacrifice was inevitable given the low price point.
They were happy with the performance, saying transitions are smooth, navigation is fast and there’s no irksome delay when switching between applications, unlike the stumble and stutter they experience on Android handsets in the same price bracket.
They note
Microsoft has clearly done a fantastic job of optimising its operating system for lower-specced devices. Google’s software engineers should probably give them a call.”

Nokia to produce a “unique” Windows Phone for every US carrier

Speaking to Bloomberg, Chris Weber, president of Nokia’s North America unit, said with the Lumia 900’s success the company was now back in USA, but needed to expand to more carriers.
“We’ve had a great start with T-Mobile and AT&T,” he said “But that’s just a start.”
“We’re back in the U.S., we’re back in Canada — it’s exciting, but there’s more work to do.”
He continued, saying the key to getting more Lumia phones into consumers’ hands is giving each carrier a “unique proposition,” so they can show how the devices stand out from the iPhone or Android models.
While only AT&T and T-Mobile offer the Lumia phones now, Verizon Wireless has said it’s preparing to add a new Nokia model to its line-up. Weber’s comment suggests this will be a differentiated product.
Speaking about the future of Nokia, who is in financial troubled waters, he noted the difference between RIM and Nokia is that RIM does not have a partner the size of Microsoft to build an ecosystem that can compete with Apple and Google. In addition to creating the operating system and encouraging software developers to use it, the company prods phone retailers and other partners to offer incentives and in-store promotions.
“There are only a few companies in the world who can build an ecosystem that scales to what consumers demand,” Weber said. “Right now my view is that it’s Apple, Google and Microsoft because it takes deep pockets, lots of engineering talent, and the scale and scope globally to build that ecosystem.”

Morgan Stanley survey finds 25% of tablet buyers are waiting for Windows 8 tablets

Morgan Stanley has conducted a survey which shows Microsoft could slip near instantly into the second spot in the tablet market. According to their survey 25% of those intending to buy a tablet were planning to buy a Windows 8 tablet, ahead of 22% who intend to buy an Android tablet.

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 now available on Pre-Paid

image

image

The Nokia Lumia 710 is now available on Pre-Paid on T-Mobile USA where it costs only $249.99 with $50 refill, bringing the actual cost down only to $199.  The handset is also available in store on Bestbuy where it is retailing for $299.
The handset appears to be the best specced from the Pre-Paid devices in the price range, with most offering 3 megapixel cameras, WVGA screens and Android 2.3, and some even running 600 Mhz processors, which we all know is buttery smooth on Android.
Nokia has the logistic scale to be able to compete in the low-end and still make money, so hopefully their handsets will get the recognition they deserve for the great value for money they deliver.

Nokia Lumia 900 selling out in Netherlands

image

A few days ago, on the 7th, we posted on the Nokia Lumia 900 becoming available in the Netherlands on PDAshop.nl .
It seems the company may have underestimated demand, as they have sold through their supply in less than 3 days, with the handset being marked as sold out.
Fear not however, as KPN still seem to have a few handsets in their inventory, which can be found here.

Nokia Lumia 900 launched in China by Han Geng

hangeng1   hangeng2   hangeng4

Popular Chinese Singer/Dancer Han Geng attended the official launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 in Joy City mall in Beijing, China.
Apparently he has significant star appeal, as the event was a sell-out , with the the ground floor of the mall was completely occupied, making it hard to even find a standing place.
Above he stars in an advert for the handset, which will now be available in Cyan, Black and White color.
WPSauce notes the handset has been re-branded in Chinese as “??”, or “extraordinary” with the tagline “There’s no ordinary life, just ordinary people.”
The smartphone has been on sale since yesterday, and will hopefully make a significant impact on Nokia’s Q2 shipments.

Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders fail to dislodge Nokia Lumia 900 on Amazon

amazonbestseller

The Nokia Lumia 900 has proven surprisingly resilient on Amazon’s best seller charts, frequently hitting the top position despite the arrival of much vaunted HTC One X.  Now even the start of pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S III, expected to be the biggest phone next to the iPhone 5 this year, has failed to cause the handset to budge.
Hopefully the Amazon status reflects in-store purchases (as it has in April and May) and June will end up being a good month for the Nokia Lumia 900 (and Nokia also of course) too.

Nokia finally announces the release of the Nokia Lumia 900 in Germany

It seems the time for delay is finally over, with the Nokia Lumia 900 formally announced in Germany.
Nokia has announced  the "multi-award winning" Lumia 900 Nokia will be available for a MSRP of 579 Euros, while on Amazon the phone can be had for  € 504.89  if they could actually get round to announcing a delivery date.

The (translated) press release reads as follows:

Multiple award-winning Nokia Lumia 900 available now in Germany

Nokia Lumia 610 now available in Ireland

image

Nokia’s great value low-end Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 610, is now available in Ireland.
The handset is available unlocked for 179.99 Euro (£145, $225) and also available on contract on Vodafone, Meteor and eMobile.
On eMobile the handset is available for only 29.50 Euro per month for 12 months and a 49 Euro down payment which includes 1 GB of data per month, which is the kind of deal we used to have before contracts spiralled out of control.
While the 256 BM Windows Phone Tango handset is somewhat crippled compared to 512 MB devices, when compared to Android handsets at the same price point the handsets offers a much improved experience and specs, which should make it a no-brainer for those looking for a cheap smartphone.

Windows Phone maintains its improved run rate

wmpoweruser

image

The graph does not show it clearly yet, but looking closely at the end of the graph one can sense the end tipping upwards.
Since the beginning of April, with the release of the Nokia Lumia 900, the Windows Phone People Hub has been adding 100,000 Facebook users roughly every 2 weeks, rather than around every 3.  This improved run rate has been maintained for the last month, with a hint of further acceleration, with the last 100,000 taking 13 days, and the one before 14.
Using our usual ratio, that gives us 13.65 million Windows Phone users, and suggests around 4 million Windows Phones will have been sold in Q2 2012, excluding any Chinese sales, which excludes Facebook integration in the People Hub. This would represent 200% growth year on year compared to the same period last year and 35% sequentially.
Hopefully we will continue to see an acceleration but current rates suggest 20 million Windows Phones for 2012 should certainly be possible.

Nokia Lumia 610 now available in Mexico

Nokia Mexico yesterday announced that the Lumia 610 is now available for Telcel in black, cyan, magenta and white. The phone is available both on regular contract (Plan Telcel), or prepaid with an Amigo Kit for $MXN 3,499 (approx. $USD 250).
The phone comes with WCDMA, HSDPA, EDGE, and quadband GSM. Nokia Maps, Drive and Music will be available as apps.

New Jersey’s Seton Hall University opts for Windows Phones for incoming class

image

Nokia, AT&T, Microsoft and Seton Hall University announced today a step forward in Seton Hall’s Mobile Computing Initiative, whereby all incoming freshmen will receive a Nokia Lumia 900 each for extensive use across the University. The entire class of 2016 will receive a Nokia Lumia 900 powered by the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system, to support the university’s mission of providing state of the art technology tools to enhance the student experience and prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world.
All Seton Hall students have access to SHUmobile, an app available across multiple platforms that provides access to campus news feeds, directories and maps. However, Seton Hall freshmen will have access to a custom Freshmen Experience component of this app exclusive to the Lumia 900. This personalized element adds customized social media integration and direct communication channels with their freshmen peers, peer academic advisors, housing information and roommates.
image
Additionally, the University will leverage Nokia Data Gathering, recently made available for Windows Phone, to communicate with the incoming freshmen beginning this summer by conducting polls, providing information to help students prepare for college and to learn how the Lumia 900 and other technologies are being used.
"Nokia has a long history of innovation and their partnership with Microsoft allows us to extend the core academic and community resources of the University into the pocket of our students," noted David Middleton, Executive Director, Center for Mobile Research and Innovation, and Assistant Vice President of Administration at Seton Hall University. "By providing our new incoming students with the Nokia Lumia 900, Seton Hall University can expand our existing Windows services and infrastructure while providing a unique, high quality, dynamic and engaging mobile experience."
"Mobile technology has become ubiquitous and pervasive, but we are just beginning to understand the breadth of its impact across campus. Smartphone use in higher education has tended to rely on finding a specific app to fulfill a specific curricular purpose. With the close collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft on the Lumia 900, the phone itself takes center stage" added Michael Taylor, Academic Director, Center for Mobile Research & Innovation.
Professor Taylor explains that the seamless integration of core academic tools such as Microsoft Office increases the opportunity for faculty and students to connect, collaborate, and create. The synthesis of Windows Phone features and Lumia 900 hardware are a natural enhancement to the University’s commitment to teaching and learning with technology. Utilizing AT&T’s 4G network, these partnerships will help foster new opportunities for learning, content creation and experimentation. Teaching and learning can now take place not just in the classroom but virtually anywhere, providing a more engaged and integrated learning experience.

Kantar Wordpanel: “… we expect to see signs of Android, RIM and iOS customers switching to the Microsoft platform.”

wmpoweruser

Kantar Worldpanel have released their market share numbers for the 12 weeks ending May 2012 and as has been usual recently, it reads as pretty good news for Windows Phone.
They note that Windows Phone now held over 3% market share in most major markets, with its share highest in Germany and the US.
In Spain Windows Phone held a 2.6% market share.  This is up from 1.9% for the April period, a growth of 37% in only a month.  Windows Phone is close to outselling the iPhone there, which only had 3.3% market share, down from 5.8% last year, after operators dropped phone subsidies in the struggling economy.
It also seems Microsoft achieved their goal with Windows Phone, with the majority of WP7 customers in the US being first time smartphone owners. Windows Phone has also finally started convincing Windows Mobile users that it is a worthy upgrade option instead of Android.
Sunnebo adds: “Our data clearly shows that in the US, LTE/4G handset capability is crucial for brands wanting to steal existing smartphone consumers. As WP7 handsets with this capability start to become more prevalent, we expect to see signs of Android, RIM and iOS customers switching to the Microsoft platform.”
The limited numbers show clear momentum for the platform, which is making slow but very steady progress in market share.

A new Lumia 900 ad

A new Nokia Lumia 900 ad showing ex-baseball player, and current analyst John Kruk so immersed in his new Nokia Lumia 900 that he hardly pays any attention to the game at all.
This is an interesting contrast to Microsoft’s original “Really?” campaign (right) where Windows phone was portrayed as the OS that will save us from those disabled by constantly being wrapped up in their phones.
BusinessInsider notes that this is a better message for Microsoft, and more consistent with the way people want to use their smartphones.

SIM-unlocked Nokia Lumia 900 now available in Australia

image

If you are Australian and you prefer your phone without any carrier branding and your updates directly from Nokia, you can now purchase a fully SIM-unlocked Nokia Lumia 900 from Mobileciti.com.au for only $629.
The handset comes in Cyan and comes with a 24 month manufacturers warranty, and is of course completely free from any Telstra, Vodafone or Optus tags.

Nokia touts superiority of Nokia maps over Google Maps: “not only available for 1, 2 or 29 countries; it is available for over 110 countries."

image

Nokia has struck back at Google’s announcement of off-line Google Maps navigation, which will in fact only allow users to download a 10 mile radius of Google Maps data for off-line turn by turn GPS navigation in only 29 countries.
Google notes that this will allow international travellers to save on data costs by downloading cities ahead of time.
Nokia insisted today however that a small 10 mile area was just not enough. By way of comparison, Nokia allows customers to download street-level maps for entire countries.
"Offering offline maps is not only about giving the option to cache some data offline for later use, it’s a complete experience," the company said in a blog post Thursday. "An offline experience is not only about street maps, it’s also about offline available points of interest (POIs) to enable offline search, it’s about navigation voices available on-device and offline rerouting."
"So now you have all these shiny maps stored offline and you are ready to go. What will you do with them?" Nokia asks. "Most probably you are going to put your smartphone in your car and start navigating. In your home city, in your country, or abroad for vacation. It would be a shame to travel somewhere and discover you couldn’t do much with the offline maps because no navigation instructions were available. This is why our voice guided turn-by-turn navigation is not only available for 1, 2 or 29 countries; it is available for over 110 countries."
Nokia currently offers Nokia Maps and Transport and Nokia Drive on their Lumia handsets, and has provided regular updates with new and improved functionality, and quoted as saying today "We’re basically the world’s largest mapping company."

Nokia Lumia 900, 610 now in sale in the Netherlands

If you have been waiting with bated breath for the Nokia Lumia 900 to arrive in the Netherlands, you can now relax, as the handset has shown up on sale at KPN and PDAshop.nl.
The handset has still not made an appearance in Germany, but according to Nokia Germany its launch is imminent.

Analyst checks finds Nokia Lumia 900 continue to sell well in US, not fazed by the HTC One X

image

There is an opinion that Nokia Lumia 900 sales have dropped off in May after a high profile launch in April, with the coming arrival of increased competition from the HTC One X
Pacific Crest’s James Faucette writes that following his “checks” with U.S. carriers’ sales reps he found May’s handset sales were up in general versus  April, as is seasonally to be expected.  Regarding the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Lumia line specifically he found that “reasonably good” in May, writing:
Sales of Nokia‘s (NOK) “Lumia” line of phones, developed with Microsoft (MSFT) were Our checks indicate that sales of Nokia’s flagship Windows phones, the Lumia series, continued at run rates in the United States roughly equal to those we detected a month ago. We continue to believe that Lumia 900 sales at AT&T in particular are benefiting from an extremely broad advertising campaign, which may also be helping out sales of the Lumia 600 at T-Mobile by giving the Lumia platform greater overall exposure. Our checks indicate that sales of Lumia products in Europe likely increased from April.
If Nokia is able to maintain sales month on month despite competition from high profile Android handsets it is likely Windows Phone would be able to boost its current US retail market share from its current 3.2% according to Kantar to a more significant 5%, which should cement its position as the 3rd ecosystem in US.

Windows Phone Marketplace passes 100,000 published apps

image

AAWP has announced, by their count, that Marketplace has now passes the 100,000 app milestone, with a total of 100,145 apps having been published.
They found Windows Phone took 20 months to hit the mile stone – 4 months faster than Android, which took 24 months, but 4 months slower than the iPhone, which took 16 months. In May, an average of 313 apps were added to Windows Phone Marketplace per day. This was up from April and almost double the number from May 2011 (166 per day).
It took Windows Phone 14 months to reach 50,000 apps, but only another 5 months to double that figure to 100,000.
At present in US 77,450 apps are available, in UK 72,933, France (69,879), Spain (66,361), Italy (68,180), Germany (69,153), Australia (70,036), Russia (55,052), Brazil (47,453) India (69,771) and China (33,063).
The majority of apps are published in English (68,529 of live total) with French (5,627), Spanish (4401) and Italian (3225) being the next most common.
Entertainment remains the the single biggest category (18,867 items). The next three biggest categories are tools + productivity (14,591), books + reference (12,816 items) and games (12,212).  Unfortunately a big part of the bump in the apps in marketplace was a big influx of single ebooks being added. This however only increased the percentage of Books and Reference from 12% to 13%. 6 months ago when there was 50,000 apps in marketplace this number was 14%.
67% of items in the Windows Phone Marketplace are free, 10% are paid with a free trial and 23% are paid. 61% of paid apps are $0.99 and 7.7% $1.99.
They note quality of apps have remained stable, with between 8-12% of apps receiving more than 5 ratings.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 to show up regularly in UK Hollyoaks TV drama

image

Younger UK readers should be seeing a lot more Nokia Lumia 800 and 710’s on TV soon, as the company announces a product placement deal with the popular young-adult orientated TV drama Hollyoaks.
Characters will be sporting both Lumia 800 and 710 phones and Monster’s Purity HD headphones, while Nokia ads will appear at the village bus stop from July.
The deal will run for an initial 4 month period, and will include Nokia Lumia handsets being promoted through a content portal on Channel4.com, which will recreate the phone’s home-screen with two Hollyoaks characters Tweeting their on-screen personality.
John Nichols, the head of marketing at Nokia UK, said: "This partnership is another example of how we are pushing the Lumia brand in new innovative ways, with a human approach across multiple platforms."
There have been recent reports of increased sales of Nokia Lumia handsets in UK as the product reaches new price points and retailers become more comfortable selling the Windows Phone handsets, with the Lumia 800 re-entering the top 10 handsets sold in UK last week.
Then CCS Insight director Ben Wood said: ‘This is encouraging news for Nokia. It is not pricing alone but also Nokia’s hard work with the channels to raise awareness and understanding of the Lumia 800 which is showing dividends. Maintaining this momentum with the launch of the Lumia 610 will be critical and I think Nokia fully understands that.’
