Nokia Lumia 920 proves its low-light prowess to the Verge

Feeling the need to prove that the Nokia Lumia 920’s Pureview camera was indeed the real deal, Nokia took the Verge to Central Park to compare the Samsung Galaxy SIII, iPhone 4S, HTC One X and the Lumia 920 taking photos in low light.

I think the pictures below speak for themselves, with the Lumia 920 really turning night into day.

The Nokia low-light photo challenge on video

Are you curious whether the PureView camera on the newly announced Lumias actually 

works as they claim with low-light conditions? Nokia had a representative at the NYC evening event specifically proving that the phone is indeed capable of producing these pictures!

In our video, the Lumia 920 went up against the HTC Trophy (admittedly a terrible camera phone), and the results were clear as ever. The Lumia 920 managed to capture the picture with nearly no light (and no flash). The quality of the picture is yet unknown since we could only see the picture distantly from the phone’s screen, but the phone can definitely make even the darkest things shine brighter than ever.

Nokia did not want to “defile” the Nokia Lumia 920 with a microSD card slot

For many the only negative with the Nokia Lumia 920 is the absence of expandable storage via microSD card.

Now Nokia executive VP Kevin Shields have explained that for Nokia, in this case it was all form over function.

"We started with the premise that we wanted an uncompromised physical form," Shields told PC Pro. "To put an SD card slot in it would have defiled it."

He adding the existing ports in the polycarbonate uni-body smartphone was difficult enough.

"Most people aren’t using the storage in their phone, anyway," Shields concluded.

There is no arguing that the Nokia Lumia 920 sports an extremely attractive design, and fitting a microSD card at the top or bottom of the phone would have been pretty difficult.

Recombu has managed to capture the screen shot capability in Windows Phone 8, which seems to be activated by holding the power button and pressing the Windows key, pretty close to how it works on the iPhone. Pictures are then placed in a special folder in the camera roll.

The feature has been long awaited, and while it has been pooh-poohed by Microsoft as a feature which no real person has ever asked for, it has taken off on the iPhone in various SMS auto-correction errors and Siri humour sites which Windows Phone users have completely missed out on, showing more than bloggers would have benefited from the feature earlier.

Synaptics ClearPad Series 3 the secret to the Nokia Lumia’s Super Sensitive Touch

Synaptics, a leading developer of capacitive sensors,  has confirmed that it is their technology behind the unique capacitive screens on the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820.

The handsets will be the first smartphones in the world to use a new advanced multi-touch experience based on the  Synaptics ClearPad capacitive touchscreen sensing technology, which brings support for gloves and fingernails.

Previously, people were unable to use their smartphone touchscreens with gloved fingers or long fingernails, requiring them to remove their gloves, or awkwardly position their fingers with long nails in order to operate their phones. The new ClearPad Series 3 technology instantly optimizes the touch experience by automatically detecting the presence of skin, gloved fingers, or fingernails, giving users a seamless multi-touch experience regardless of input methods.

"We are excited to participate with Nokia as they unveil their first Windows Phone 8 devices by enabling advanced features such as gloved finger support," said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager of Synaptics Handheld Division. "Synaptics and Nokia have partnered for many years and we’re pleased to continue the innovation with the introduction of these new devices."

Tech press previews of the Lumia 920

Reviewers generally agreed that the new features of Nokia's flagship Lumia 820 and 920 handsets - improved sensitivity for the 4.5 inch display screen, wireless charging, 4G network capability, Pureview camera and Nokia's advanced mapping and location services - were impressive. CNET loved it. The Verge loved it. Benzinga loved it. The Boy Genius Report loved it. PC Advisor loved it. In fact, I have yet to readany disparaging reviews about the Lumia in the technophile press. Wired and PC World have yet to weigh in, but I doubt they'll buck the trend.

BGR:

Compared to smartphones from vendors such as Samsung (005930), Motorola and LG, Nokia's Lumia phones are in a completely different league. There are no flimsy plastic covers or cheap-feeling buttons, just a high-quality unibody plastic case that feels terrific in the hand.

Benzinga:

The phone is gorgeous, clever, and contains some of the most creative features ever seen in a smartphone.

The Verge:

the Lumia 920 essentially matches the top-tier of what's available on Android in all the important specs, unless you absolutely must have a super-sized screen, although Nokia is boasting that its 1280 x 768 PureMotion HD+ screen offers better quality.

The full specs of the Nokia Lumia 920 is now available on Nokia’s website.

The specs reveal the device is not the thinnest at 10.7 mm, but in return the handset is a specs monster with Quadband HSDPA and Pentaband LTE, a 17 h talk time on 2G and 331 PPI display (higher than the ‘retina’ display of the iPhone 4S.

Nokia explains why the Nokia 920’s camera is Pureview

The proof will be in the pudding, but Nokia has been making a pretty good case for why the Nokia Lumia 920 does indeed have a Pureview camera, even if it does not have 41 megapixel.

Besides the large aperture and optical  image stabilization, the handset also has a high intensity short pulse LED flash, which also cuts down on movement artefacts and blurring.

Nokia has in fact written up a white paper explaining what Pureview 2 is all about.

Gizmodo managed to catch a side by side demo of image capture comparing an iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S III and the Nokia 920 Pureview.

They write:

Here’s a side-by-side-by-side of the Nokia Lumia 920′s PureView camera up against the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S III. It’s pretty darn impressive.

This comparison (taken with a T3i) shows low-light shots taken at the same time by all three phones in a dark box that was set up at the Lumia event in New York today. The Galaxy S III representation isn’t quite fair since my screen brightness was turned down pretty far to save battery. But even just comparing the Lumia to the iPhone 4S demonstrates a really awesome showing from the Lumia. The Nokia reps couldn’t tell us what the ISO setting was for the Lumia’s camera, since the firmware and processing isn’t final, but man, it looks pretty amazing so far.

Anandtech also captured a picture in the low-light box, and the results, comparing the Nokia Lumia 920 and Apple iPhone 4S, is pretty clear:
